Galangal grows in tropical and subtropical areas, on forest roadsides, hillside grasslands or bushes on low mountains and hills below 700m above sea level. It is suitable for planting in red soil with deep soil layer, loose texture and fertile soil.

This medicinal plant is dug up in late summer and early autumn, the fibrous roots and remaining scales are removed, washed, cut into sections, and dried. It can be used as medicine. Also known as southern ginger and honey ginger. It is a common seasoning for curry in Southeast Asia and even India.
